Furniture Care Guide

At Exclusive Furniture, every piece of furniture has been carefully selected and designed to provide years of beauty, comfort and durability. Proper care and maintenance can help preserve the appearance and performance of your furniture for years to come.

Our team is here to help should you have questions about caring for your furniture, continuing the quality, style and value you deserve.

Upholstery Care

Regularly Vacuum

Vacuum fabric furniture regularly to remove dust, hair and dirt and help prevent premature wear. All upholstered furniture should be routinely cleaned and maintained to keep it looking its best.

Excessive pet hair found on furniture may void the manufacturer's warranty.

Maintain Cushions

Fluff pillow-top seats, back cushions and accent pillows weekly. Regular hand fluffing helps prevent premature wear and maintains the shape and appearance of the cushions.

Zippered poly-fill cushion cores may be fluffed in a dryer using a no-heat setting. Cushions may feel firm when new and will gradually soften with normal use.

Comfort Wrinkles

Comfort wrinkles are designed into upholstered furniture to provide the necessary give that allows seat cushions to respond naturally during use.

Gathers may also be sewn into specific areas to complement the design and add depth, dimension and balance. Some wrinkling should be expected with both fabric and leather upholstery.

Fabric Pilling

Fabric pilling refers to the small balls of fiber that can develop on upholstery with normal use. This occurs when loose fibers move to the surface through friction and is not uncommon with many fabrics.

Pilling can generally be removed with a small fabric shaver designed for upholstery.

Fabric Characteristics

The appearance of upholstery may vary depending on the weight, fiber content and nap of the fabric. Chenille fabrics, for example, may show natural highlights and shading because of their softer yarns.

Variations may also appear in pleats, tucks, skirts and seams because upholstered pieces are individually tailored.

Leather Characteristics

Scars, wrinkles and natural markings are typical characteristics of authentic leather. These variations contribute to the character and beauty of the material and mean that no two leather pieces are exactly alike.

Cushion Fill & Down Feather Cushions

The materials used inside seat cushions, backs and throw pillows play an important role in comfort and longevity. Proper care of down and feather cushions can help maintain their appearance and comfort for years.

Turn and rotate removable cushions regularly to promote even wear. Fluff cushions as you would a pillow weekly or every other week, and vacuum them regularly to help maintain resiliency.

No fabric is completely feather-proof. Small feathers may occasionally work their way through the cushion cover. This is a normal characteristic of feather-filled cushions.

Leather Care

The Most Important Step

One of the most important ways to protect your leather furniture is to keep it away from direct sunlight and heating or cooling sources.

Leather is a natural, durable and beautiful material. When properly cared for, it can maintain its appearance for many years.

Cleaning Leather

Dust leather upholstery weekly using a soft cotton cloth. Blot spills immediately using distilled water and a clean, lint-free cloth.

Avoid cleaning leather furniture with chemicals, sprays, oils, polishes, bleach-infused wipes or other harsh cleaning products. These products may permanently damage the leather.

For routine cleaning, a dry cloth or a slightly damp cloth with lukewarm water is generally all that is needed.

Check the Cleaning Code on Your Furniture

Always review the manufacturer's cleaning tag before cleaning your furniture.

W

Spot clean using only the foam from a water-based cleaning agent.

S

Cleaning should be performed by a professional cleaning service using an appropriate solvent-based cleaning agent.

X

Clean only by vacuuming or lightly brushing with a non-metallic brush. Do not use water-based or solvent-based cleaners.

Printed Materials

Printed materials such as magazines, newspapers and books may transfer ink or color onto leather furniture when left in contact with the surface for extended periods.

Avoid leaving printed materials on leather furniture for prolonged periods of time.

Wood, Marble, Glass & Metal

Exclusive Furniture offers distinctive furniture and home accents made from wood, marble, glass, iron and combinations of these materials. Understanding the natural characteristics of these materials can help you properly care for and enjoy your furniture.

Variations in Wood

Natural variations in color, grain patterns and other markings add beauty and character to wood furniture and are not considered defects. Color and grain can vary from one piece to another.

Distressed & Rustic Wood Surfaces

Distressed or rustic wood furniture may contain small gouges, worm holes, markings, indentations and surface cracks.

These characteristics are intentionally incorporated into many designs to provide character and distinction and are not considered defects.

Mechanical Noises

Some mechanical noise may occur during normal operation of reclining furniture because of its moving components.

Seasonal squeaks may also develop and disappear as temperature and humidity levels change.

Adjustable Doors & Feet

Adjustable doors and feet on tables, entertainment centers and other furniture pieces allow for proper alignment and accommodate variations in flooring.

Alignment may change as temperature and humidity fluctuate and wood naturally expands or contracts.

Variations in Metal Table Bases

Variations in steel, cast iron and antique brass table bases can occur as part of the handcrafted manufacturing process.

Weld beads, textured surfaces and variations in color or finishing techniques contribute to the individual character of each piece and are not necessarily defects.

Variations in Marble & Stone

Natural marble and stone surfaces will vary because of their natural formation. Differences in color, shade, veining and pattern may occur even within the same furniture style.

These variations are natural characteristics of the material and are not considered defects.

Wood Care

Some cleaners can damage furniture finishes and make wood surfaces appear dull or uneven. Proper cleaning and maintenance can help keep wood furniture looking beautiful for years.

  • Wipe wood surfaces with an appropriate commercial wood cleaner or warm water containing a small amount of mild dishwashing soap.
  • Do not use Windex, Clorox wipes or similar harsh cleaners on wood furniture.
  • Avoid waxes and harsh detergents unless specifically recommended by the furniture manufacturer.
  • Keep furniture away from extreme heat and prolonged direct sunlight to help prevent fading or damage.
  • Never place hot pots, pans or other hot objects directly on a wood surface.
  • Use coasters beneath beverage glasses to help prevent moisture rings.
  • Do not write directly on a table surface without using a protective writing pad. Pressure from writing may transfer marks to the furniture surface.
  • Maintain reasonably consistent humidity levels in your home to help minimize wood expansion, contraction or splitting.
  • Do not allow moisture to remain on wood surfaces. Dry wet areas immediately.

Marble Care

Although marble is stone, it is naturally porous and may stain if not properly cared for.

  • Wipe spills from marble surfaces immediately.
  • Use coasters under beverage glasses to help prevent moisture rings.
  • Do not place extremely hot or cold items directly on marble surfaces.
  • Clean marble with lukewarm water and wipe dry using a clean, soft cloth.
  • Never leave pools of water or standing moisture on marble tabletops, as this may contribute to staining.
  • Do not use harsh chemical cleaning products on marble or granite surfaces unless specifically approved for that material.
  • Clean oils, lotions, food residue and other substances promptly, since porous stone surfaces may absorb them.
  • Protect marble from scratches by avoiding direct contact with sharp-edged objects and using coasters, placemats or other protective coverings when appropriate.

Wobbly Wooden Chairs

It is not uncommon for a wooden chair to appear to wobble slightly, particularly when placed on an uneven floor.

We recommend checking all chairs at the time of delivery so that any issue with the chair itself can be addressed with the delivery team when possible.

Uneven flooring may also cause a chair to wobble. Floors can become uneven because of settling or shifting in the structure beneath tile, wood or other flooring materials, and this can occur in both new and older homes.

If a chair appears uneven, first move it to another level surface in your home or carefully test it on a flat tabletop or countertop. This can help determine whether the movement is caused by the chair or the floor beneath it.

Important: Always follow the manufacturer's care instructions and cleaning codes provided with your furniture. Material characteristics and recommended cleaning methods may vary by product.
